Peak District Highland Games Womens
Report and Results– Matlock 29th August 2021
This year the crowd were treated to a
new addition to the competition to mark the Peak District Highland Games 5th
year at Matlock Farm Park with a women’s category running alongside the men’s to represent the sport
of strongwomen and the fantastic athletes on this circuit. This was a mixed weight category to demonstrate different strongwomen.
Up stepped powerful Nicky Walters
(Guinness World record holder and active strongwoman), the sensational pocket rocket Chloe Brennan
(England’s U64kg bodyweight champion), and wildcard entry 15 year old Millie
Thornton after a great showing at the Lincoln truck pull event last month we co
ran with strongman and Promoter Dave Johnson.
Nicky
Walter stone of destiny
The crowd ramped up a level getting
behind all 3 athletes as they took on the caber toss, stone throw, stone of
destiny and truck pull, with Chloe Brennan taking up the challenge to lift the
honorary Dinnie Stones as her last event.

In the caber toss all athletes were
given some practice sessions with a smaller caber and some guidance from the
more experienced athletes such as Jake Rideout who shared some tips with the women
(quietly and out of earshot of his competitors).
The sport of strongwoman and
strongmen is a competitive one but a sport where you will witness the guys and
gals encouraging each other to get the best score they can in events, something
fans have commented on after the competition. You will often see competitors
running alongside a fellow competitor shouting words of encouragement.
In the stone throw Millie Thornton
threw a 3 metre 40 best in her first ever full competition the crowd getting
behind Millie aka Millie Con Carne as her Dad (and winner of the Men's Peak
District Highland Games) encouraged her. This earned her 3rd place.
Great to see Millie at such a young age perform under the pressure of a big competition.

Next up Chloe Brennan threw a 3 meter
60 throw, the lightest competitor of the whole pack, man beast crew,
photographer crew and probably a lot of the crowd at only 10 stone, proving
weight doesn’t mean less power, and later on she proved just that in what we
would get to witness.
But it was Nicky Walters with a clear
win with a fantastic throw of 4 meters 50 earning the points with a wide
margin.
The tractor pull win was taken by the
ever impressive Chloe Brennan pulling the 4 tonnes across 20 meters in 17.14
secs, the crowd packing the runway strip to experience this classic world’s
strongest man event. Chloe compensating with sheer upper and lower body
strength to pull the tractor home.
In second place experienced athlete
Nicky Walters hit a time of 17.33 sec time pulling the tractor, just a
whisper behind Chloe with nothing much between the two at this stage.
Millie Thornton treated the crowd
with a 19.75 time tractor pull, more than credible and up against two very
experienced athletes in Nicky and Chloe. Something she has been training with
her Dad Dave Thornton, arguable one of the best vehicle pullers in the region
if not the Country.
In the caber toss Nicky tossed the
caber the furthest by 1 meter with a 6
meter 90 throw beating Chloe’s best of 5 meters 90 and in third place
Millie Con Carne with a 4m 40 throw.
Literally a meter between all athletes, a clear win for Nicky Walters.

In the stone of destiny it was Chloe
who took the win with a super quick pick up and run down the course in a time
of 10 seconds flat. Nicky coming in with a time of 10.27 seconds and Millie
unable to pick up the stone. It was fantastic to see Nicky and Chloe encouraging and helping her give it a go which was
great to see.
Concluding the women’s competition saw Nicky and Chloe tied on 10 points each decided on countback (margin of wins) settling the positions with Nicky in 1st place, Chloe in a close second and Millie in 3rd surely gaining valuable competition experience.
Big credits to Nicky here and all the athletes who were
learning on the job in the events and displaying some fantastic fetes of
strength.

Bonus event Chloe Brennan lays claims to be the first woman ever to lift the honorary Peak District Dinnie Stones
Chloe Brennan amazing honorary dinnie stone lift
After positioning the stones to
Chloe’s preference she shocked the whole man beast team, venue staff, athletes
and crowd squatting low and incredibly becoming the first woman to ever lift
the honorary dinnie stones clear off the floor in front of an electrifying
crowd spurring her on, many surprised faces amongst us all. Just wow.
